How can bacteria that forage on organic particles survive in vast ocean regions where such particles are extremely sparse? A new study by researchers from ETH Zurich and Queen Mary University of London shows that variability at the level of individual bacteria plays a central role. Using a probabilistic population model linking mathematics and microbiology, the team demonstrates that rare, high-impact encounters sustain bacterial populations even when average conditions suggest decline.

ETH Zurich establishes a new strategic framework to strengthen its Diversity, Equality and Inclusion efforts. This combines existing initiatives, sets clear goals and intends to provide guidance to ETH members over the coming years.

Ulrich Weidmann, Vice President for Infrastructure and Sustainability (VPIN), will step down from the Executive Board at the end of March 2027. He will retire in mid-2028 and wishes to ensure a smooth transition into his post-work life. He plans to give the new ETH President the chance to make their first personnel decision in the search for his successor.

At its meeting on 4 and 5 March 2026 and upon application of Joël Mesot, President of ETH Zurich, the ETH Board appointed twelve professors, including Professor David Kaufmann. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Spatial Development and Urban Policy and is based at the Institute for Spatial and Landscape Development in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering.
